On either end it's difficult, trying to manage the responsibilities of work while caring for a newborn, a growing child or older folks. What do you do to make it work?

I love the paradigm that Samantha Ettus poses in her book The Pie Life: A Guilt-Free Recipe for Success and Satisfaction. In her book she uses the idea of a pie, not a scale. As your career evolves over time different slices of the pie are larger or smaller depending on whether or not you have kids, have young kids are changing jobs, getting into management etc. The main lesson is that different aspects of your life will get more or less attention depending on where you are in the lifecycle.. and that's okay! When I read her book I had 2 kids under the age of 5. Samantha mentions being patient with career advancement during that time because small children to take a lot of time and effort. I followed that advice and focused on honing skills where I was at that time vs trying to advance. Once my kids were older I did get promoted and took on larger roles. I highly recommend this book if you want to learn more.,
